Mumbai, Oct. 6
THE Jawaharlal Nehru port got a relief from the indefinite strike by transport operations on Thursday, with the 12 unions representing the transport workers deciding to postpone the agitation by one month. This follows an assurance given by the Union Minister for Shipping, Mr T.R. Baalu, on Wednesday that he would "amicably resolve" the issue of toll charge within a month.
The transport operators had gone on strike on Wednesday, demanding withdrawal of the toll charges on every truck that entered and exited the port using the 26-km-long entrance road that links the port with the Pune Expressway.
Mr Sanjay Podar, Co-Chairman of the JNPT Toll Tax Abolition Committee, said the Minister had invited the union representatives to Delhi for talks on the issue on October 13. "After the Minister's assurance, we have decided to give the authorities one-month time to resolve the issue," he said.
