JET Airways on Tuesday announced the launch of its daily service between Chennai and Singapore, beginning December 7.

The flight from Chennai leaves at 10.20 a.m. and reaches Singapore at 5.10 p.m. The unique timings and day-flight is seen as a USP.

At a press conference here, the Chief Operating Officer of Jet Airways, Mr Paul Luethi, said the airline would use Boeing 737-800 for this segment. Three of those aircraft would be juggled around to serve five destinations Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. The airline has announced an inaugural economy class return fare of Rs 12,000 and a Club Premiere class return fare of Rs 46,060 for two passengers travelling together. Mr Luethi said the service would break-even at an average annual load of 67 per cent and was confident of earning profit. He said that although there were more than 1,000 aircraft seats available in this segment, the growth in traffic justified the service.

He said the low-cost, `get-you-there' services by other airlines would not affect Jet Airways' business plan, observing that both business models low-cost as well as full service had their own markets. He said that over the next three years, Jet Airways would add 12 Boeing 737-800/900 and 22 wide bodied aircraft to its existing fleet of 51. The fleet expansion would cost close to $5 billion.
