THE Chennai Port Trust is putting up a desalination plant to supply potable water to the trust's offices, residential quarters of employees, industrial canteen, hospital and other agencies in the port premises.

Thirteen companies have expressed interest in the Rs 6-crore project, according to a port trust official.

The project involves water supply of 1,000 tonnes a day. The contractor will be entrusted with design, manufacture, erection, testing, commissioning, operation, maintenance and supply of potable water for seven years, says the project tender.

The project is to be located near INS Adyar in the port premises. The raw water to the plant will be either directly from sea or from bore wells to be dug by the contractor close to sea. The intake of water to the plant by means of laying of necessary pipelines from sea or digging necessary bore wells near INS Adyar will be at the cost and expenses of the contractor, says the tender.
