Kochi, June 6

The Mekhala Solidarity Forum, formed by all the trade unions functioning in various spheres in the Kochi port, has urged the port management to take urgent steps to settle the agitation being continued by the Port and Dock workers since April 12.

In a joint statement, issued by the Trade Union Forum, pointed out that the port management has not taken any steps in sanctioning the revised pay and perks to workers after signing the settlement at the national-level in January.

Likewise the management should also take efforts to engage private sector workers in cargo handling activities in Willingdon Island after the migration of container terminal operations to Vallarpadam.

The progress and survival of the Willingdon Island is inevitable for the survival of workers directly and indirectly associated with port activities.

The forum also demanded that the port management should drop the proposals to privatise the harbour dry dock, workshop and container freight station.

The port should also procure suitable dredgers required for maintenance dredging considering the huge cost involved in it.

It was also decided to carry out a march to the port administrative office on June 10 as part of the solidarity action to settle the demands of the port and dock workers.
