Ford India on Tuesday announced the launch of a Fiesta diesel variant Exi, which is priced about Rs 40,000 lower, compared to its existing models, at Rs 6.85 lakh ex-showroom here, thereby having three variants each in petrol and diesel Fiesta sedan range.

Announcing the launch of the Fiesta Diesel EXi, the Vice-President, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford India, Mr Scott McCormick, said Ford Fiesta has recorded impressive sales since its launch late last year with about 70 per cent of its volumes coming from Diesel variants. Fiesta has recorded over 20,000 numbers.

"Ford leads the premium midsize car market in Andhra Pradesh with close to 30 per cent market share. With the addition of Fiesta Diesel EXi to our portfolio, Ford is all set to extend its lead in the diesel market in the State and across the country," Mr McCormick, who assumed office recently as VP, said.

Referring to the growing trend of taking to diesel cars, Mr McCormick said that in the European countries, up to 50 per cent of the cars sold are powered by diesel plants and it would not be long before this would become the order of the day in India.

From the current 35 per cent of all cars sold in the diesel segment in India, this is likely to go up significantly in the next two years, particularly given the rising fuel costs.

With advanced technology, a diesel car has the advantage of 40 per cent lower fuel cost and 40 per cent lower running cost, he explained.

The sales of Fiesta are complimented by the freshened styling of Ikon variants, which seeks to target youth as youthful icons. According to Ford, this has emerged as the aspirational entry midsize sedan in the country.
