SRESTA Natural Bioproducts Pvt Ltd opened its first outlet, called 24 Lettered Mantra, in the city on Friday.

This would follow an expansion into all major cities. In the first phase, the company plans to open stores in Chennai, Bangalore, and Pune by the year-end.

The stores sell organically grown fruits, vegetables, staples and spices. "All our products are free of chemicals and additives," said Mr Rajasekhara Reddy Seelam, Managing Director.

Speaking to newspersons to mark the launch, he said that the company had entered into farmers and NGOs in Rajasthan, Maharasthra, and Orissa for exclusive supply of products.

Stating that the global organic foods market was worth about $40 billion, he said that the awareness had just picked up in India. "This will go a long way."

He added: "Our products conform to European and American organic production norms."

The company had invested Rs 2 crore so far.

Mr Reddy said that supply chain mechanism and storage facilities were the two big critical issues for the organic foods segment to grow.
