THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Striking employees of the regional office of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) marched to the main gates of the office building here on Wednesday, the first day of the two-day nationwide direct action programme, before courting arrest.

A massive police cordon was thrown around the main entrance and the gates locked from inside preventing the marchers, including women, from entering the premises, said Mr Jose T. Abraham, employee leader. Officers and other employees then proceeded to court arrest.

Among those who addressed the staff at a protest meeting held on the occasion included Mr P.V. Jose, General Secretary of the State Bank of Travancore Staff Union; Mr G. Madhusoodanan Nair, District Secretary, Confederation of Central Government Employees; and Mr Jagannathan, District Convenor, All India Bank Officers' Confederation.
