This is with reference to "Iron ore industry opposes cess, ban on exports" (

Business Line

, September 30): Such an action may affect Goa's private sector iron ore export industry in the short-run.

The time, however, has come for the review of the policy. Recently, the illegal iron ore mining activity and exports to China from Bellary district in Karnataka attracted the nation's attention. Besides heavy loss to the State's revenue, rise of mafia groups, lawlessness, corruption, black money, environmental hazards, exploitation of the poor etc., were reported. This evil should come to an end. And with several projects for steel production in the pipeline, more iron ore is needed.

A policy revision with a long-term view is necessary. When will we wake up?
