The President, Mr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, has suggested that the Cauvery be linked with the Vaigai, the Palar and the Tamiraparni rivers to ensure that not much water is let into the sea.

As Mr Kalam has pointed, water is one of the five areas of importance that would help the country to achieve a 10 per cent growth.

While stressing on cost effective desalination, the President has underlined the need for reducing the cost of solar power, enhancing agricultural growth, progress in food processing, improvement in education and healthcare besides giving major thrust to information and communication technology. There is an urgent need for self-reliance in critical technologies and that would pave the way for providing "urban amenities in rural areas."
