THE Union Government has decided to liberalise the Central scheme that aimed at assisting young scientists in pursuing their research activity.

In an informal chat with presspersons at the 93rd Indian Science Congress here on Tuesday, Dr V.S. Ramamurthy, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, said the rules for getting financial assistance under the `Young Scientist Fast Track Project' would be liberalised in order to benefit more scientists.

The scheme was launched three years ago. About 250 scientists had so far been awarded the grant.

He said scientists with a Ph.D were eligible to get assistance. Eligible candidates would get Rs 3 lakh a year for three years. No questions were asked.

Dr Ramamurthy, however, said the project should not be an open-ended one. "There should be certain objectives. We would like to know what he/she intends to do,'' he said.
