He was Time’s Person of the Year in 2013. He’s got a Rolling Stone cover. And now, Pope Francis has achieved superhero status, at least for graffiti artist Maupal. The graffiti mural, dubbed ‘SuperPope’, has received the approval of the Vatican via a photo post of it on Twitter. In the mural, Pope Francis is depicted soaring into the sky, fist extended and crucifix swaying in the wind. Clad in a white cape, he is seen carrying a satchel branded ‘valores’, Spanish for values. In the history of papacy that has seen some truly terrible popes – fat and inert Innocent VIII, anti-Semitic Paul IV, Benedict XVI, Pope Francis comes as breath of fresh air. However, the Rolling Stone piece reveals that we might have misinterpreted the pope’s famous line on gay priests, “who am I to judge”. It was closer to “Look, who the hell knows.”
