In Blackadder the Third, Prince George found himself on the verge of bankruptcy. A shocked House of Commons marvelled at the Prince Regent’s spending habits – £15,000 on banqueting, £20,000 on perfumes and an astonishing 59,000£ on socks. Two hundred years later, Queen Elizabeth II is in a similar predicament. She’s down to her last million. A report by the Commons public accounts report reveals that the Queen’s household finances were at a “historic low” and the royal palaces were “crumbling”. Staff at Buckingham and Windsor is catching rain in buckets to protect art, her croaky old boilers need replacing and 39 per cent of the royal estate needs repair. While most Britons have embraced austerity, since 2008, the royal family has not yet learned “to do more with less”. Time for a Kickstarter campaign, we say.
