“Dog goes woof, Cat goes meow, Bird goes tweet, and mouse goes squeak…Cow goes moo, Frog goes croak, and the elephant goes toot…Ducks say quack, and fish go blub, and the seal goes ow ow ow ow ow… But there’s one sound, That no one knows… What does the fox say?”

While writing the lyrics of this song (yes, you heard that right! it is a song), Norwegian comedy duo Ylvis probably did not think of breaking into Billboard's charts and competing with the likes of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, etc. I’m sure they were not even considering breaking the YouTube's ‘most-watched’ video record of Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’. But, soon it’ll be there. ‘Gangnam Style’ has a record 1.8 billion YouTube views to its credit.

Gone are the days of meaningful lyrics. Now a days songs are all about the catchy beat, cast, visuals, etc. For the gen-next, lyrics have no meaning as long as it’s enough to make heads bob or foots tap while partying in clubs.

‘Gangnam Style’ had no meaning for anybody in the world except Koreans who understood the meaning and yet was an overnight sensation.

>The Fox has no meaning, whatsoever. It was meant to be a joke but ended up storming into the US Top 10 charts and, more recently, entered the UK’s Top 20 list. The song already has more than 177 million views on YouTube.

Ylvis is a Norwegian comedy duo, brothers Baard and Vegard Ylvis. The Fox was released in September. Even if the song does not make any sense, the appeal of the song is in the way it has been directed and the music.

One of the brothers, Baard called the catchy tune “rubbish song”. Well, anybody (me included) listening to the song will say it’s a rubbish song. Or probably it became a hit because it’s a ‘rubbish song’.

A comparison cannot be drawn between the songs but one aspect that is common in both - ‘The Fox’ and ‘Gangnam Style’, both were made for the local audience (Norway and South Korea respectively) but both have become international successes.
