How often have you left home early to go sit in your air-conditioned office, or left office late so that you could enjoy the cooling for a little while longer? Blue Star seems to have tapped into this thought when it made its ‘Party’ TVC that has been playing on TV for a while now. Only, this time it’s not the office that’s the cool refuge sought, it’s a friend’s home. A couple has just ushered the last guests out after a party, and look forward to putting up their feet, but no, a few friends have expertly camouflaged themselves so that they can hide and enjoy the superior cooling from a Blue Star AC, whose ad claims that “nobody cools better”. The visual effects – watching the friends coming to life from an armchair, a painting, and a bookshelf – and the acting, right down to their grudgingly leaving the house when their tired hosts throw them out, made this a really cool ad to watch.

Kiss and tell

I had a hard time figuring out the latest Karbonn ad for the Titanium Dazzle 2. At first, I thought it was like any other ad for any product which makes its owner desirable, like a deodorant, or a shirt, but what was I thinking, here it’s the phone that dazzles, of course! The ad goes like this: Men who have left their Titanium Dazzles alone for a few moments find it decorated with a kiss (all seem to be the same shade of fuchsia lipstick, though the women kissing the phone look different). And the film is set in foreign locales. Aspirational images, I suppose, for a brand of low-cost smartphones. Finally, a woman of a certain age plants a kiss on the phone, and guess what? Her nails are painted fuchsia too!

The benefits of being ‘ushaar’

There’s a new brand of chocolate, Luvit, and the company has launched a campaign in the South featuring actor Siddharth. Offer some Luvit as bait, be “ ushaar ” (street smart/alert in Tamil) and you can reel anyone in, be it the curmudgeonly senior who wills you his money or the dad whose car is wrecked by his daughter. The ad, though long (1.37 minutes), isn’t a drag on the viewer. The lyrics and the acting raise a hearty chuckle and I liked the explosion of colour that pervades the ad.

And while on the South, did you know that Coca-Cola Turkey has made a video using the ‘Why this Kolaveri Di’ tune? It’s full of beach, bikinis, swagger – and very familiar Kollywood dance moves. Which ads impressed/put you off this week, and why?
