After termination from Tata Motors, about 150 temporary workers from the company’s Sanand plant on Tuesday staged protest at Collector office in Ahmedabad demanding reinstatement.

The group under the banner of a registered labour union, Chemical Mazdoor Panchayat, submitted a memorandum to the District Collector raising objection to the termination and demanding intervention in resolving the issue through dialogue with the company.

Ashim Roy, President of the Union, stated that the company betrayed the workers by terminating them after serving for over seven years. “The company can’t justify termination of so many people in one go. There is no planned downsizing nor the company is facing financial stress. It is learnt that the company is replacing these workers with new workers by conducting big recruitment drive,” said Roy, adding that pushing the educated skilled young boys into unemployment will result into a big trouble.

Tata Motors, however, clarified that the temporary workers were relieved as their fixed-term engagement came to an end. “..as per terms of engagement, these ex-temporary workers were engaged by the company for a fixed period of time and were relieved at the end of their term. They are no longer associated with Tata Motors,” said a company spokesperson.

However, the spokesperson further added, “Some of them have approached labour authorities in the past and the matter is sub-judice.”

The company currently employs about 4,000 blue-collar employees at the Sanand Plant.

Roy stated that the state of joblessness for the young workers, who come from local farmers families will create uncertainty for them amid insufficient employment opportunities. “They have been making representations to the government and even to the company. After three months of efforts, they had to take out this protest. There are questions on the government’s approach too. This is a potentially explosive situation, where even political people are willing to intervene. But we don’t want this to become a political issue. All they want is they should be allowed to continue with the job,” added Roy.
