Three students from Jamshedpur, Mangalore and Delhi would represent India at Novartis’ International BioCamp at Basel, Switzerland.

Jamshedpur student Shreetam Subhrankar is an alumnus of XLRI, Nehul Saxena is from the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) Delhi, and Ankith Rai is from Fr Muller Medical College, Mangalore, and they took the top honours at the recently concluded Novartis biotechnology leadership camp (BioCamp) in Hyderabad, a note from Novartis said.

Ranjit Shahani, Novartis’ India head, pointed out that BioCamp was now in its fifth year and continued to provide students opportunities to engage with leaders in the pharmaceutical area outside their area of study.

BioCamp has been held annually in Asian countries since 2004, starting in Taiwan as a local event. It has since grown into a global event and around 60 students from around the world are expected to participate in the global BioCamp being held at Novartis Campus in Basel, Switzerland from August 25-28, 2013.

The seminar is open to postgraduate students and young researchers in science, pharmacology, medicine, biotechnology, business management (preference to students with a science background) or law (specialisation in IPR) interested in pursuing a career in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry.

Students go through a judging process before they are selected to participate in the country BioCamps. About 47 students from diverse faculties, including pharmacology, biotechnology, life sciences, finance, biomedical engineering, genetics, business management and immunology participated at the recently concluded India event.

The institutes which participated include the Indian Institutes of Technology, Kharagpur and Roorkee; XLRI – Jamshedpur; Fr Muller Medical College, Mangalore; National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Mohali and Hyderabad; Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai; Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata, BITS - Pilani, School of Pharmacy and Technology Management, K J Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research and S P Jain Institute of Management Studies & Research, Novartis said.
