The Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation is set to start telecasting cable television programmes from September 2.

The Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa announced in the Assembly on Tuesday, that the State Government has revived the State-owned cable television services provider. It is taking steps to provide over 90 channels. It will initially offer the free-to-air channels and is in the process of including paid channels in its bouquet.

Subscribers will have to pay Rs 70 a month for the services and will be able to save Rs 70-100 a month as compared with the prevailing rates. Cable TV operators will have to pay the corporation Rs 20 per connection.

Over 34,344 cable television operators and MSOs in all districts other than Chennai have tied up with TN Arasu Cable TV. They have a total of over 1.45 crore connections and the 24-hour telecast will be available in 31 districts.

This company had been set up as the Arasu Cable TV Corporation by the previous DMK-run Government in 2007 and had started operations in July 2008. It had over 50,000 connections at that time but the services had dropped in stages to 432 as of March 2011 during the tenure of the previous Government.

The present Government has revamped the operations, refurbished the digital infrastructure in Thanjavur, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore and Vellore, tied up with private players in 27 districts, established new analog cable television control rooms and renamed the company Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation, she said.
