Ashok Leyland, Hinduja Group’s flagship company, has won orders worth ₹1,500 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission-II (JnNURM-II) scheme.
The automotive manufacturer has won orders for 4,000 buses from 22 State Transport Undertakings (STUs).
“With rapid urbanisation and increasing agglomeration in Indian cities, it is important to modernise public transportation systems and offer technologically advanced and empathetically designed transport solutions,” Vinod K Dasari, Managing Director, was quoted in a statement issued here today.
The JnNURM is a city-modernisation scheme launched by the Government, under the Ministry of Urban Development, with an investment of more than $20 billion over seven years.
Ashok Leyland will offer a mix of JanBus, JanBus Midi (specially designed for feeder services) and Ultra Low Entry (ULE) buses under the scheme. The JanBus, a front-engine, single-step entry, full-flat floor bus, is a vehicle specifically designed for urban transport, Dasari added.
The supply of these buses has started and many of them are already carrying passengers.
Last week, Tata Motors has won orders for 2,700 buses under the same scheme.
The orders are for its ‘Urban’ buses, which have been designed for state transport authorities.
