Power equipment maker Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) today said its consortium with Alstom has won an Rs 1,600 crore contract for steam turbine generators for the Kakrapur Nuclear Power Station in Gujarat.

“BHEL has achieved a major breakthrough in nuclear segment with the first ever order for Steam Turbine Generators for new rating 700 MWe Nuclear Sets Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors,” the company said in a statement.

Valued at over Rs 1,600 crore, the contract has been placed on the BHEL-Alstom consortium by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd for its 2x700 MWe Kakrapur Nuclear Power Station, it said.

In terms of value, the State-owned firm’s share in the contract is about Rs 880 crore. In addition to this, BHEL has also won an Rs 40 crore contract for supply of equipment to the same project.

The consortium will supply the turbine generator packages for the two new 700 MW units of the nuclear power station.

“The project will contribute to India’s plans to increase its nuclear capacity to 20 GW by 2020. With an existing installed capacity of 4,780 MW, nuclear power is currently the fourth largest source of electricity in India after thermal, hydro and renewable energy,” company said.

Currently, India has 20 nuclear power plants in operation. BHEL’s designed, manufactured and commissioned equipment accounts for about 69 per cent of NPCIL’s installed capacity of 4,780 MW in the country.

The company has, so far, supplied equipment to NPCIL that has power generating capacity of 3,280 MW for various nuclear plants, it said.
