The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests has yet again directed stoppage of all construction at the 2640 MW thermal power plant of East Coast Energy Ltd., coming up at Bhavanapadu in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh.

In its recent directive, within weeks of clearing the project for construction, it has called the State Government to ensure that the project work is not taken up as some concerns have been expressed by local people, who have been opposing its implementation as they believe that the project would cause harm to the local ecosystem, which is environmentally sensitive.

The project is being developed on a marshy land, which the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Ltd – the nodal agency for land allocation in the State – allotted to the developers for the proposed plant.

The Ministry, which had earlier stalled the construction work on the site after protests by locals and violent incidents, reconsidered its decision to go ahead with the project recently. However, following fresh representations, the work has been directed to be stopped again.

Meanwhile, the company, which has invested about Rs 800 crore is pinning its hopes on the Government to execute the project.
