More than 10,000 garment manufacturers, traders, retailers and workers held a protest march at Azad Maidan here to protest against the 10 per cent excise duty levied on branded readymade garments in the Budget.
The agitation was spearheaded by the Clothing Manufacturers' Association of India along with the Intimate Apparel Association of India, the Federation of Retail Traders' Welfare Association (FRTWA), the Federation of Hosiery Manufacturers' Association, the Mumbai Wholesale Hosiery Merchants' Association, and the Gujarat Garments Manufacturers' Association.
Mr Virent Shah, President, FRTWA, said imposing excise duty on branded garments was uncalled for as the Government plans to implement GST in 2012. The levy will cripple the garment industry, he added.
