Lack of awareness on intellectual property rights is deep in tier II cities and is holding back the growth of small and medium scale enterprises, said Mr N.V. Srinivasan, Chairman, Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC), here recently. Delivering a special address at a ‘Seminar on Leveraging intellectual Property - Challenges' jointly organised by IACC, United States Patent and Trademark Office, Global Intellectual Property Academy and Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (Maditssia), he said the chamber is promoting trade relationship with the US and urged the entrepreneurs in the region to submit their profiles before April 15, so that they could be presented at the economic summit to be held in the US in May.

Delivering the keynote address, Mr Justice R.S. Ramanathan, High Court, Chennai, Madurai Branch, said that intellectual property is recognised by law as a form of intangible property. It is easily accessible to the public and posed legal problems.

To protect and preserve them, registration is emphasised, he said and explained the various acts enacted for the purpose and observed that this branch of law is a growing field with good scope for those practising in the area for interpretation of various statues.

Mr N Somasundaram, President, Maditssia and Mr V.S.Maninmaran, Secretary, Maditssia, also spoke.
