The 3,500-km-long Maruti Suzuki Desert Storm 2011, the multi-terrain driving adventure, was flagged off by the Gujarat Health Minister, Mr Jaynarayan Vyas, here today.

The ninth edition of the motorsport event organised by the leading carmaker, in which more than 280 contestants including seven women are participating, will pass through the Great Rann of Kutch, Bhuj (both in Gujarat), Jaisalmer, Barmer, Pokhran, Bikaner and Jaipur (Rajasthan) before reaching Delhi on February 27.

The six-day rally will pass through the Rann and the desert before finally culminating in the Aravalli Ranges.

In nine high-speed competitive sections with largest-ever participation, nearly 130 four-wheelers and 18 two-wheelers and quad-bikes, has commenced here for the first time.

Mr S.N. Burman, Commercial Business Head (Western India), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, said the rally also has participation by teams from several wings of the Indian armed forces.

The event is being organised in partnership with Northern Motorsport, a leading motorsport organisation in the country.
