Mr Nirmal Chandra Jha took over as Chairman of Coal India Ltd on March 1 in addition to his present charge as Director (Technical), CIL.

A mining engineer by training, Mr Jha succeeded Mr Partha S. Bhattacharyya, who retired on February 28.

According to a CIL release, Mr Jha relinquished the additional charge of Chairman and Managing Director of Bilaspur-based South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a post he has held for nine months. SECL is a wholly owned subsidiary of CIL and the largest coal producing company in the group.

Mr A.K. Singh, CMD of the Ranchi-based Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL), took over the additional charge as CMD, SECL.

It may be mentioned that in November 2010, the Public Enterprises Selection Board has selected Mr Tapas Kumar Lahiry, CMD of group company Bharat Coking Coal Ltd, as the frontrunner to assume the office CMD of CIL. However, the appointment was delayed.
