The Rs 14,000-crore 1,980 MW (3X600 MW) coal-based Ghatampur Thermal Power Project being implemented by Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) in Uttar Pradesh has hit a roadblock.
The Union Ministry of Coal had allocated the Pachwara-South Block in Dumka district of Jharkhand for the project. However, residents of the area have objected to mining, leading to a law and order problem, said B. Surender Mohan, Chairman and Managing Director, NLC.
The Ghatampur project is a joint venture between Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidut Uthpadan Nigam Ltd and NLC.
“We need to dig deep to find out the coal deposit. However, local people are objecting to the digging.
“The local administration is trying to sort out the problem,” Mohan told newspersons on the sidelines of a two-day national conference here on public relations and corporate governance.
However, the project will not be delayed due to work suspension, and is on schedule for completion in 2017, he added.
Mohan said nearly 2,500 acres of land has been allocated for the project.
Of this, nearly 50 per cent has been acquired. The State Government will supply nearly 80 cusecs of water, he said.
Power for TN Despite the maintenance shutdown of a unit, NLC has been giving Tamil Nadu 867 MW of power against the State’s entitlement of 755 MW on proportionate basis, Mohan said.
In the next week or so, once all the units are switched on, Tamil Nadu will get its full share of 1,100 MW.
On the TPS-II expansion project, he said the two units of 250 MW capacity each are in an advanced stage of construction. The lignite requirement of this project will be met by mine II expansion, which has been commissioned.
Unit I of the project is likely to be commissioned in February 2014 and the second unit will go on stream around April-May.
Besides, NLC and Tangedco, through a 89:11 joint venture called NLC Tamil Nadu Power, is setting a coal-based 2 X 500MW thermal project at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu.
According to Mohan, steps are being taken to tie up long-term supply of coal as the steam generators are designed to operate with a blend of imported and indigenous coal.
Gets award During the event, the Public Relations Society of India gave a Corporate Citizenship Award to NLC.
