The Smart TV's segment is expected to account for 25 per cent of the flat-panel-display (FPD) market in India in two to three years, says Mr Sanjeev K. Jain, Vice-President (Sales and Service), Mirc Electronics, owner of Onida.
Smart TVs account for 7-8 per cent of the 4.5-million-unit FPD TV market. Onida hopes to garner at least 15 per cent of smart TV market in two years. “And, we target 10 per cent of overall FPD market by then,” he said. The brand's market share is 7 per cent.
Announcing the launch of a Smart TV range under the brand iTube here today, Mr Jain said though these TVs are priced at least 10 per cent lower than the competition (Samsung and LG), the intention is to reduce the price differential over a period and still be competitive by packing more features.
According to him, iTube is designed to make entertainment more functional. Priced upwards of Rs 48,000 (for a 32-inch TV), these TVs are Android-powered, and will facilitate access to over one lakh free applications available in the Android market.
On the durables front, the company recently launched a range of ‘pre-cool' air-conditioners that can be operated through mobile SMS. With these new additions, Onida hopes to post a turnover of Rs 3,000 crore in two years from Rs 2,000 crore now.
