French building material company Saint-Gobain has opened a new glass manufacturing plant in India as part of a plan to strengthen operations in the northern region.

The plant, set up at an investment of ₹1,000 crore in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, was inaugurated by Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia.

It’s now operating at 70 per cent capacity, and the company is planning to ramp up capacity utilisation to 100 per cent in a year. “The location of this plant is strategic as this will help us serve the entire glass market in North India, which contributes nearly 30 per cent to our sales,” said B Santhanam, President-Flat Glass, South Asia, Malaysia and Egypt, and MD at Saint Gobain Glass India.

Saint Gobain has two other plants in the country, one each in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, and a research and development facility in Chennai.

The opening of the new plant comes at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ campaign is making news.

Focus on R&D

Santhanam said already about 95 per cent of the products that Saint-Gobain markets in India are made in its local factories.

“We are not just focusing on manufacturing, but also in doing research, design and innovation in India,” he said, adding India is one of its key growth areas and the company has made substantial investments in the country in the past 14 years.

He added that the company’s revenue has grown at 20 per cent every year.
