It has not been smooth sailing for TE Connectivity, a provider of connectivity systems and solutions, with a lock-out at two Bangalore units in March, and intermittent labour disputes.

Switzerland-headquartered TE manufactures products that are used across sectors such as automotive, consumer electronics, aerospace, medical and energy.

The company is continuing with its investments in the defence sector though, especially in aerospace defence and the marine segments, according to a senior official.

“India is an attractive destination for research and development due to its inherent advantages of highly qualified low cost engineers and scientists. Being a major component supplier, TE’s products have to be specked in at the design stage, for which we work with the design groups of many public and private sector companies in India,” said Sanjay Handu, Director, Aerospace, Defence and Marine, TE Connectivity.

Speaking to Business Line , Handu said the company was keen on alliances with Indian partners, “to exploit the emerging business opportunities, including tapping the defence offset business”.

Handu said the company’s $2-billion acquisition of Deutsch last year had expanded TE’s product portfolio to better suit Indian customers in the defence and industrial transportation markets.

Deutsch is a provider of connectivity solutions for harsh environment applications. The company has invested close to Rs 600 crore in India. Last October, another investment of Rs 300 crore was announced for a new manufacturing facility.

TE has five manufacturing plants in Bangalore and two in Pune. Despite labour issues, the company is continuing with its expansion plans.

“We are constructing an integrated manufacturing plant at the Aerospace Park, Yelahanka in Bangalore, which is expected to be operational by 2014,” said Handu.

At the new plant in Bangalore, he said, TE would design and manufacture next-generation connectivity solutions for multiple industry verticals including automotive, aerospace, defence and marine.
