Tata Steel, an integrated private sector steel major, plans to set up a 3-mt (million tonnes) per annum capacity steel plant in Karnataka.
Mr H M Nerurkar, managing director of Tata Steel and chairman of Tata Relief Committee (TRC), while delivering houses to flood-hit people of Mannur Village in Haveri, expressed happiness on the timely completion of the new Mannur Village. With this, Tata Steel's relationship with the Karnataka would grow in the years to come.
In his address, Mr C M Udasi, Minister for public works, said the State Government would provide the necessary infrastructure and facilitation for the speedy implementation of the proposed Tata Steel project in Karnataka.
TRC has built 144 housing units of 290 sq.ft each in the village, which is situated 30 km from the district headquarters of Haveri. A playground and a park have also been constructed. One-and-a-half km of plain cement concrete roads and 2.5 km of reinforced cement concrete drains have also been built. The Tata Relief Committee, a special agency, was constituted in 1967 in Mumbai. It was a result of an initiative by the House of Tata to provide relief after natural disasters.
“The construction of a school and a community centre will be taken up shortly,” said Mr Partha Sengupta, Vice-President (Raw Materials), Tata Steel.
The village, which was washed away by floods in 2009, was constructed by TRC. The foundation stone of the project was laid by Mr Yeddyurappa on March 31, 2010.
Today after inaugurating the new town, the Chief Minister, Mr B S Yeddyurappa, said: “I am extremely delighted to hand over the newly constructed houses in Tata Mannur village to the flood-affected families.”
Mr Basavaraj Bommai, Minister for water resources, was also present.
