India may soon be taking styling cues from the masters themselves.

A joint working group (JWG) with Italy is being planned to develop advanced technical capabilities in the domestic auto sector.

Led by the Government and assisted by the industry, this forum will be on the lines of a similar ongoing partnership with Germany, according to Government sources.

The Heavy Industries Minister, Mr Praful Patel is expected to lead a delegation to Italy in July with representatives from both Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) to formalise the plans.

While Italy is known for its styling and designing capabilities, German firms are known for their engineering and advance technologies.

“The domestic industry has a lot of scope to mature in engineering, styling and design.

“This technical group (Italy) will work on joint research between institutions of both countries,” a SIAM official said.

“The Government will play the role of a facilitator. For example, various domestic research bodies and companies such as Tata Motors, have partnered with specialised institutions out of Germany (on light weighting and alternative propulsion technology).

“There are many smaller opportunities that by itself an automaker may not be able to identify,” another SIAM official said.

Apart form Germany, a similar tie-up already exists with the Netherlands, though on a smaller scale.

Even with Japan there is a regular exchange of ideas in the JASIC (Japan Automobile Standards Internationalisation Center)-India forum.
