V Rishi Kumar Expanding on their 20-year partnership, Amara Raja Batteries Ltd and Johnson Controls, Inc of the US have signed a collaboration agreement to bring new technologies to India.
The two companies will share product design and manufacturing technologies for Starting, Lighting and Ignition, Enhanced Flooded Batteries (EFB) and Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries.
Bharat VI norms
Such advanced batteries help meet strict emission standards in automotive vehicles, said the firms. The advanced grid technology is also critical to meeting performance requirements associated with the Bharat VI environmental norms going into effect in 2020, they added.
Under the deal, Amara Raja will license Johnson’s proprietary PowerFrame grid technology, which is claimed to be 66 per cent more durable and corrosion-resistant than other grid designs. This technology has been tested in multiple cities around the world, in the most extreme, real-world conditions, across the full range of automotive low-voltage battery products.
Jayadev Galla, Vice-Chairman and MD, Amara Raja, said: “We have laid out a clear road map for long-term strategic growth and will continue to make investments in technology capabilities, capacity building, brands and distribution.”
Joseph Walicki, President, Power Solutions, Johnson Controls, said: “Our PowerFrame grid technology coupled with the EFB and AGM products that we manufacture provide the highest reliability and optimal performance to meet our customers’ present and future needs. We are excited to strengthen our partnership through this technology collaboration agreement.”
