Coir mattress manufacturing company Coir-on is gearing up to reinvent its products.
After a long gap, the company has introduced in the market its new product Luxury Coir Mattresses - Platinum Plus.
The mattresses launched prior to Diwali is a dual purpose (can be used on both sides) one, with layers of rebonded foam, PU foam and coir.
CM Harirajan, Director, Coir-on, said the sale of coir mattresses registered a steep decline with the introduction of alternative products such as foam and spring mattresses. “The sales dipped by close to 50 per cent over the last five years. We, therefore, decided to roll out a combination mattress with coir, so as to give a steel-mattress-like look.”
Besides focusing on the South Indian market, Coir-on mattresses are exported to Maldives, he said adding “it is not regular, but the annual turnover is around ₹30-40 lakh”.
“The challenge for coir mattresses is on the technology front. More funds should be allotted for R&D. Also, there is huge paucity of skilled labour in the sector,” he said.
