The Company Secretaries Institute will this month launch a course on ‘international taxation’ as part of efforts to equip its members on this crucial subject in current globalised business environment, its President Mamta Binani has said.

“Taxes have now become boardroom issue. We are in a global village. I (referring to a company secretary) am not able to sit in a board meeting if I don’t have some understanding of international taxation. So I am trying to help my members gain expertise on this and have it on their fingertips,” Binani told BusinessLine here.

She said that Company Secretaries — who now perform the role of strategists — should have ‘international taxation in their armoury.

The idea is to take it (international taxation) to wider mass, Binani said.

The Company Secretaries Institute will, also this month-end, launch special courses on “Understanding Banking Terminologies”, “Valuation” and “Internal Audit,” she said.

Many company secretaries are already performing the role of internal auditors in Corporate India.

The Company Law enacted in 2013 has specific provision allowing company secretaries to be appointed as internal auditors.

Woman directors

Binani asserted that there is plethora of talent pool as far as woman directorships are concerned.

“All the hullaballoo in corporate sector that we don’t get woman directors’ is not correct. Managements have to positively look at profiles,” she said.

She also felt that the Union government should start looking at woman directors as independent woman directors.

“That is when you will see more of people coming into Boards as woman directors rather than kith and kin of company promoters,” Binani said.
