Three contractual workers died following a fire accident reported at one of the units at Reliance Industries Ltd's Koyali complex in Vadodara early on Thursday.
"In an unfortunate incident this morning, a fire broke out at PBR2 plant of the Vadodara complex. The fire was restricted to one section of the plant and timely action by Reliance fire-fighting team helped in quickly extinguishing the fire," the company said in an official statement.
"Unfortunately, three contract workers, who were injured latter succumbed to injuries, despite the best efforts of the medical team," it added.
Vadodara City police has registered a case of accidental death and initiated inquiry. "Fire was reported around 3.30 am today at one of the machines at the unit. Prima facie overheating of one of the machines appears to be the cause for the fire. But an investigation is on. Three casualties have been reported due to the fire, which was restricted to one part of the unit," said a police official from Jawaharnagar Police Station, under whose jurisdiction the Koyali refinery falls.
The company had attended to the fire call on its own. While assuring support to the families of the victims, RIL added, "While an investigation will be conducted to ascertain the reasons for the fire, the rest of the complex is continuing with normal operations."
Reliance Industries shares were trading at Rs 1,173.40, up nearly 2 per cent on NSE, on the Thursday.
