America’s fast food restaurant chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), which has expanded to 335 outlets in India since coming here in 2006, will soon have competition. Another US-based major, Genuine Broaster Chicken (GBC) plans to roll out nearly 40 restaurants by December and 90 by the end of 2017, offering “healthier” products.

The Mumbai-based Yellow Tie Hospitality (YTH), a food & beverages (F&B) franchise management company (an F&B franchisee aggregator), is in the process of locking exclusive Master Franchisee Rights (MFR) for India, of some of the world’s famous F&B brands. It has already tied up with GBC, whose first outlet will open at Versova, Mumbai, in July, Karan Tanna, Founder-CEO of the self-funded, six-month-old start-up, told BusinessLine . By the end of 2016, nearly 40 branches will be opened in Raipur, Imphal, Surat, Kolkata, Gurgaon, Patna, Vijayawada and Gangtok, among others. By the end of 2017, about 90 outlets will be rolled out across India.

Tanna said GBC will be available in multiple formats like kiosks, quick-service restaurants (QSRs) and casual dining outlets

GBC, established in 1953 and now present across 36 countries, says it is known for serving “healthy” food. It uses fresh chicken, not frozen, and pressure-fries these using patented pressure fryer technology. It is cooked in Broaster Pressure Fryer, which utilises 50 per cent less oil than open fried chicken and retains more chicken moisture. It has zero trans-fat, and more protein fat per gram than saturated fats and carbohydrates. Then it is marinated and coated with GBC’s proprietary products. The marinades, seasoning and blended cooking oils provide it a special flavour. “We will also offer products like Jong-Lee burger and Happy Fried Chicken, among others.”

He said the company is also in the process of signing similar India rights and franchises with two more major brands — an Indian celebrity chef’s brand, and a desert brand from London —by end-2016. By 2017, YTH, a joint venture of Tanna with Franchise India, aims to have 10 leading F&B brands in its portfolio.
