Grundfos India, subsidiary of the Danish pump manufacturer Grundfos, has launched Smart Solarz, a solar pump for domestic use.

The pump is targeted at semi-urban, urban and peri-urban population. The pump, which uses only solar energy, costs ₹30,000 without solar panel and can pump 400 litres per hour on average. It is ideal for use in houses and buildings up to two floors, small schools, dispensaries, health centres, diary farms, house gardens and terrace gardening.

Ranganath NK, Managing Director, said currently solar panel has to be bought separately, which will cost around ₹15,000. The company is working with vendors to package solar panel with the pump.

According to Ranganath, the potential for affordable solar pumps for domestic use is huge in India, especially in areas where power supply is still a challenge. The company is looking to work with small and medium scale industries for making plastic parts for the pump.

Currently pilots are going on in Chennai, Bengaluru, Nepal and Kolkata. Plans are in the pipeline to export to Africa and Indonesia once the approvals from the parent company are in place, Ranganath said.
