The growing preference for scooters over motorcycles has led to the Honda Activa racing ahead to become the highest selling two-wheeler in the Indian market in the first half of 2016, breaking a 17-year bike monopoly.

With sales of 13.38 lakh units in H1 2016, Honda Activa numbers grew by over 17 per cent in comparison to 11.41 lakh units in the same period of 2015. It has now gained a lead of 1.04 lakh units over the nearest competitor, Hero’s 100 CC motorcycle Splendor.

Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Senior VP - Sales & Marketing, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt Ltd said, “The superior convenience, unisex appeal, coupled with product features (increased mileage, style and technology) has converted millions from pillions to riders. We thank our valued customers who have made Activa the most preferred choice of families for commuting in India. That’s what we call Activating the Nation.”

Since its launch in 2001 as the first two-wheeler by Honda 2Wheelers India, Activa has re-energised the dying automatic scooter market. Sales of Activa rose from 55,000 units in its debut year to over 2.46 million units in fiscal 16.

According to HMSI, every second automatic scooter purchased in India today is a Honda Activa and its sales alone contribute 15 per cent to the domestic two-wheeler industry.
