Access to natural gas will now be easier for consumers of Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) with the introduction of newer cylinders. The new Type 3 cylinders can double the quantity of gas transported in each vehicle, according to IGL officials. This service will be offered in areas that have CNG stations but where pipeline infrastructure is yet to reach.

“This will give consumers access to a substantial quantity of natural gas to start their operations without having to wait for pipeline infrastructure to develop. With this technology, more gas can be transported on trucks to CNG refuelling stations in the interim, till the pipeline is developed,” an IGL official told BusinessLine .

An IGL statement said the company has introduced the Type 3 CNG Cascade mounted on a CNG-driven Medium Goods Vehicle (MGV) in collaboration with Tata Motors. The Type 3 cascade (cylinder casing) is a structured bunch of aluminium-lined, carbon fibre-wrapped cylinders. These ultra-light weight cylinder cascades are about 70 per cent lighter than conventional steel cylinders.

IGL said this represented an advantage in cost-effective gas transportation. The high gas carrying capacities of these newer cylinders allow them to be used as a virtual pipeline and are termed as Multi Element Gas Containment (MEGC) systems.

Along with MEGC cascade, Tata Motors has also introduced its newly developed LPT 1412 CNG light truck as the latest CNG variant offering in the market. The LPT1412 CNG has an 8 tonne payload capacity, with about 95kg of CNG tank capacity, suitable for long route applications.

The vehicle has a bigger tyre size of 8.2X20 and has a 19 feet loading deck length. With this, IGL has introduced a bulk gas transportation system in the country in association with Tata Motors, Luxfer Uttam India and Chaudhary Transport Company.
