Industry chambers commended Shramev Jayate, the labour reform initiatives of the Narendra Modi Government, saying it would be critical for enhancing growth of the manufacturing sector.

“It will facilitate the firms to deploy the desired workforce in their manufacturing units vis-à-vis softening procedural compliance,” the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry said in a statement. Sharad Jaipuria, President of the chamber, said online filing of returns would help improve labour law compliance and a new scheme will end discretion of inspectors.

Chandrajit Banerjee, Director-General, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), said “Simplification of procedures has been a long-standing concern for industry and this initiative by the (Labour) Ministry will considerably ease the burden of compliances, especially for SME (small and medium) sector”. The most important advantage of the portal, he said, was online registration of units and filing of self-certified single online returns. This will provide enormous relief to industry and reduce the compliance burden, especially for SMEs, which had to earlier file multiple returns under each law, he added. CII also welcomed the “Labour Inspection Scheme”, which it said would bring in a lot of transparency and accountability. “Rationalising inspections have been a long-standing demand from industry,” he added.

Assocham also complimented the Government for initiating labour law reforms to protect the legitimate interests of workers as well as simplifying erstwhile “complicated and frustrating” provisions.
