Jet Airways has revised the charges for cancellation and rescheduling of flights, and these come into effect on Thursday. In a late night statement on Wednesday, the airline said it is “introducing a guest-friendly, tiered framework that will reward its domestic guests with substantially lower penalties for advanced intimation for changes in their bookings including cancellations, changes as well as refunds.”

For passengers making a change within seven days of their flight departure on economy class tickets booked under the Classic category, Jet Airways will levy a change fee of Rs. 2,800 and refund fee of Rs. 3,800.

For those travelling in economy booked under the Classic category and making a change in their bookings more than seven days before departure, there will be a change fee of Rs. 2,000 and a cancellation fee of Rs. 3,000. However, the airline has not specified what these charges were earlier.

“Jet Airways’ passengers who have booked tickets at lower fare levels might have to pay more for cancellation and rescheduling of their tickets,” said a travel industry player who declined to be identified as he does business with the airline.

The executive of another leading travel portal pointed out that change fee and refund fee in Classic, Saver and Lite booking categories were almost equal to the cost of the flight ticket.

“The Classic, Saver and Lite booking categories are the lower fare levels which are popular with most travellers as they have been introduced to take on competition from the low-cost airlines. The latest circular seems to suggest that the airline is trying to dissuade passengers from cancelling or rescheduling their flights,” he said.

Airlines charge a passenger a fee for making a change in the original date of travel which is known as ‘change fee’ while cancellation fee is what the airline imposes on passengers who have purchased tickets at lower fare levels and want to cancel their travel plans.
