There is a big truck painting the city red these days, leaving behind an inviting aroma, especially for Delhi’s Mexican food lovers. The food truck, the first mobile restaurant launched by the Lalit Suri Hospitality Group, is part of the hotel chain’s foray into the outdoor catering business.

Keshav Suri, Executive Director, The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group, said, “After being in the hospitality business for 25 years, we have entered into outdoor catering with ‘The Lalit Food Truck Company’ for providing service to people at their doorsteps. Through the outdoor catering vertical, we aim to tap the niche market and gain market share.”

The company will tap into its team of dedicated professionals and the catering unit is running through all its hotels, he said. The catering division will primarily target high-end outdoor events.

As part of this business, the company also launched its first mobile restaurant in the form of a food truck in Delhi, that serves Latin American cuisine such as churros, quesadillas, falafel, tacos, among others.

Asked about taking its mobile restaurants to other locations, Suri said, “The Lalit Food Truck is an extension of food and beverage at the Lalit New Delhi. Right now, it is being run as a promotion and is still at a nascent stage.”

As far as its hotel expansion is concerned, the company said it is focusing on expanding its presence in the mid-segment. In an earlier interaction with Business Line, Jyotsna Suri, Chairperson and MD, Lalit Suri Hospitality Group, had said that instead of building new hotels in the luxury segment, the company will focus on expanding hotels in the mid-segment.

“The Indian middle class, which wants the comfort and a certain hygiene level, but doesn’t want to pay a very high rate is the bulk of the travel segment. India is full of high-end luxury hotels. Initially, I had a plan to do 21 luxury hotels, which I am not doing now. I will finish the Ahmedabad and London properties and focus on budget hotels,” she had said.

The company said it has two hotels under brand ‘The Lalit Traveller’ and will add 25 more in the next five years, without divulging investment details. The group will also open refurbished hotel property at London by 2016, which it had acquired earlier.
