Premium car brand Mercedes-Benz on Tuesday expanded the range of luxury vehicles under its popular sub-brand Mercedes-AMG with the launch of two new cars – Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 and GLA 45 4Matic.

CLA 45 is priced at ₹75.20 lakh onwards and the CLA 45 ‘aero edition’ is priced at ₹77.69 lakh onwards (prices ex-showroom, all India). GLA 45 comes with a starting price of ₹77.85 lakh and the GLA 45 ‘aero edition’ is priced at ₹80.67 lakh.

With these two new luxury cars, the company now offers 12 variants under the AMG sub-brand in India. In this calendar year alone, Mercedes-Benz has so far launched seven AMG models.

Both CLA 45 and GLA 45 will be powered by the 2.0-litre 4 cylinder turbo engine. They will produce 280 kW @6000 rpm and up to 475 Nm of torque between 2250 rpm and 5000 rpm. CLA 45 sprints from 0 too 100 km in 4.2 seconds, while GLA 45 is capable of 0-100 kmph acceleration in 4.4 seconds.

“The performance car segment is evolving well in India and we have been very successful in this segment with our AMG-fleet of cars. We dominate this segment, which has annual volumes of about 500 units, with about 50 per cent share,” said Roland Folger, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India.

Explaining further on AMG segment, he said: “with Formula One connection we have a perfect vehicle in AMG”.

Average age of the customer of its AMG brand of cars is 30 years in the country as against the average age of 37 years for Mercedes-Benz cars in India. “A lot of young people are showing interest in AMG brand and it has many first-time customers too,” he added.

Asked about the fourth quarter of 2017, Folger said that October month had some moderation in sales, while it bounced back in November so far.

The September quarter was its best-ever sales quarter with volumes of 4,698 units. It clocked total volumes of 11,869 units during the January-September 2017 period.

The company had projected a double-digit growth in annual sales for 2017. Its total volumes were 13,231 units in 2016.

Though Mercedes-Benz India has been clocking strong growth, the overall luxury car market is growing at a slow pace with annual volumes hovering between 38,000 and 40,000 units.
