The country’s leading tyre maker MRF on Thursday achieved a significant milestone with the commencement of supply of nose wheel tyre for the Indian Air Force’s fighter aircraft.
MRF has been supplying main wheel tyre for SU 30 MKI, the most advanced fighter aircraft group in the IAF fleet.
Similarly, indigenisation of nose wheel tyres for SU 30 MKI was also taken up by MRF and after successful field trials, the company is gearing up to supply the nose wheel tyres for the fighter aircraft.
Chairman of MRF KM Mammen handed over the ‘MRF Aeromuscle Tyre’, indigenously developed by the company, for the Sukhoi aircraft of IAF in the presence of Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E K Palaniswami at the Defence Industry Development Meet held here.
“MRF is currently executing an order for supply of nose wheel tyres for Sukhoi fleet,” a company official told BusinessLine .
The company has supplied a couple of thousand units of Aeromuscle range of main wheel tyres for Sukhoi fleet.
MRF’s supply of Aeromuscle tyres for Sukhoi aircraft follows its successful production and supply of tyres for IAF’s helicopters earlier.
After meeting all stringent norms set by various authorities, MRF started supplying tyres for Chetak range of helicopters in 2008. It has supplied close to 2,000 tyres for Chetak range of helicopters.
It also started working on developing main wheel tyres for fighter aircraft and came up with Aeromuscle tyres for fighter aircraft, making MRF one of the few global OEMs supplying tyres to the defence industry.
Mammen had earlier told this newspaper that supply of tyres to Defence was a prestigious project for the company and would take up the challenge to produce aircraft tyres by meeting all requirements.
The IAF intends to indigenise tyres of all aircraft fleets and is looking for vendors to develop tyres for IL-76 and MiG 29 UPG aircraft fleets. This will be followed by development of tyres of other aircraft fleets operated by the IAF.
