The Tata Steel Managing Director, Mr H.M. Nerurkar, has emphasised on the need for proper management of coal and coke, which play an important role in blast furnaces in steel-making industries.
The focus is to reduce carbon dioxide emission in steel-making and sustain the coke cost for economic steel production, Mr Nerurkar said while inaugurating a two-day international conference on coal and coke, organised by the Indian Institute of Metals, Jamshedpur chapter and Tata Steel, here today.
Due to volatility of coal prices, he said it is a challenge for stakeholders to maintain quality and address environmental aspects at the same time.
On coal prices, he said that the past few years witnessed a wide fluctuation in the prices of coal and the ever-increasing appetite of the steel makers to get control on coking coal has further fuelled prices.
Mr Nerurkar said an increase in performance efficiencies guaranteed improved competitiveness not only among steel makers, but also in steel and other materials.
