PepsiCo India has decided to give a makeover to the plain-looking returnable glass bottles of Mountain Dew.

In an effort to add convenience and make it more relevant for the millenials, PepsiCo India has introduced the “ring pull” cap instead of the usual crown caps on its returnable glass bottles for beverage brand Mountain Dew. This is also the first time PepsiCo has globally introduced the “ring pull” caps for glass bottles.

Vipul Prakash, Vice-President, Beverage Category, PepsiCo India, said that this is a first-of-its-kind packaging innovation introduced by a carbonated soft drink company and could become a significant game changer for this sector in the coming years.

In time for the summer season, all the Mountain Dew returnable glass bottles in the Hyderabad and Telangana have transitioned from sporting crown caps to ring pull caps. Priced at ₹ 12, the 200 ml new glass bottles have been made available to consumers in these regions and the company is promoting them through a digital campaign.

“Over the last two decades, PepsiCo has been introducing various packaging innovations...Keeping in line with this strategy, we have introduced the ‘ring pull caps’ for the Mountain Dew glass bottles, which is the first of its kind packaging innovation by a carbonated soft drink beverage maker globally,” he said.

The company plans to expand the reach of this packaging innovation to other parts of the country after September and will finalise its plans after gauging consumer feedback. The company may also look at extending ring pull caps in glass bottles to other beverage brands in its portfolio.
