From a management trainee in 1987 to handling a pivotal role in the global arena in 2013, Nitin Paranjpe, the outgoing CEO and Managing Director of HUL, has come a long way.  He has had a five-year stint in the corner office since 2008, when his appointment created headlines as the youngest-ever CEO of the Indian arm of Anglo-Dutch consumer goods maker Unilever.

He took charge during the slowdown. Paranjpe was 44 then. Under his leadership, the company grew its top line from Rs 20,000 crore to Rs 28,000 crore with focus on innovation and massive research and development.

Paranjpe's tenure has seen the HUL stock move from levels of Rs 230 in 2008, to over Rs 663 currently. The rejig came as a bit of a surprise as he was nominated to be the CEO for a second term in April.

Under his leadership, the company was able to tap the rural market. “He wanted to ensure that the company trebles its rural reach in two years, but he did that in just a year,” said a company spokesperson.

At 49, he has been elevated to a larger role in the parent Unilever as President (Home Care) where he will be responsible for all the major developments in the home care business of the world’s second largest consumer goods maker.
