Former chairman of Coal India Ltd Mr Partha Bhattacharyya is set to take over as the Managing Director of Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd (HPL).
The outgoing managing director of the company, Mr Swapan Bhowmik (Bhowmik), told PTI he was laying down office on March 31 at the end of his term and that Mr Partha Bhattacharyya would replace him as the new MD.
“However, he is to obtain approval from the Coal Ministry,” Mr Bhoumik said.
Mr Bhattacharyya, who superannuated from CIL on February 28, was a top contender for the post along with the former chairman of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Mr M.B. Lal.
Earlier, Mr Bhattacharyya had said that his candidature would not be a problem since coal and petrochemicals were unrelated business areas.
His name was proposed by Mr Purnendu Chatterjee, one of the two principal promoters of HPL. The other promoter, the West Bengal Government, had conveyed its decision that it was not opposed to Mr Bhattacharyya’s candidature for the post.
The former CIL chief had been credited with making the IPO of the coal PSU a huge success.
