Reliance Industries Ltd, which announced the launch of a feature phone at its Annual General Meeting on July 21, caused much more than a ripple in the virtual world, with about 73 million hits on social media platforms alone, claims the company.

The AGM’s proceedings reached more than 72.58 million people across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and mobile push notifications. Further, the videos of the proceedings — including a live streaming of Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani’s speech — and other content garnered more than 6.2 million views across Facebook, Twitter and YouTube among others, according to an internal analysis by RIL.

The company’s live telecast of the AGM proceedings in virtual reality garnered more than 2 lakh views. This is the first time the AGM of a company in India was telecast over VR platforms, said the analysis, which was seen by BusinessLine .

RIL 40th AGM (since its IPO) was conducted physically before a packed audience at Birla Matoshree Sabhagriha in Mumbai.

The AGM was keenly watched by shareholders, expecting a “disruption”, much like last year. This year, Ambani announced the launch of the “effectively free” 4G-enabled feature phone and a 1:1 bonus issue for RIL shareholders. Further, he also said Jio services will cover 99 per cent of the country’s population in the next 12 months.

Ambani also threw light on the progress of the petcoke gasification project at Jamnagar, and added that RIL’s energy and materials businesses will have the potential to reach an operating revenue of ₹1 lakh crore.

During RIL’s AGM in 2016, Ambani had announced the commercial launch of telecom services under Reliance Jio Infocomm.
