Godrej Household Products (GHPL), a 100-per cent subsidiary of GCPL (Godrej Consumer Products), has announced that Sara Lee Corporation has terminated GHPL”s licence for the Rs 49-crore Kiwi (shoe care) and Kiwi Kleen brands in India.
Sara Lee will now pay GHPL a sum of Rs 177 crore for terminating the brands.
In the past, Sara Lee had been a joint venture with GHPL and subsequently Godrej bought out the 51 per cent stake of its joint venture partner.
During the course of the joint venture, certain Sara Lee brands had been licenced to GHPL and this included brands such as Kiwi, Ambipur and Brylcream.
Sara Lee globally has decided to exit the household and personal care business and has already sold brands such as Ambipur to P&G and Kiwi to SC Johnson while the Brylcream brand may be bought by Unilever.
In a press release, Mr A. Mahendran, Managing Director, GCPL, said, “Over the last few years, our team has been growing the Kiwi brands in India and Sri Lanka through a compelling product portfolio, specialised focus on the modern trade channel and leadership position in Sri Lanka. We wish continued success for the brand.”
