Shapoorji Pallonji Group's Sterling Generators plans to expand in the African market for supplying diesel generators.

The company’s export push comes with the experience of having 1,700 generators operating in India with a capacity of 1,260 MW.

Sterling Generators will manufacture the generators at its Silvasa plant and exporting them.

“After success in India, the next big thing that is happening for us is West Asia.

“We have set up an office in Dubai, a workshop in Abu Dhabi and almost 50-60 per cent of the market in the UAE we have covered.

“Now, we are looking at Africa in a serious way,” Sanjay Jadhav, President, Powergen Business, Sterling and Wilson Powergen Private Ltd, told BusinessLine .

Manufacturing line He added that the company has set up offices in Nigeria and South Africa.

“In the next two to three years, we really want to develop Africa as a market for us,” said Jadhav.

For supplying the products to the export market, the company has invested in upgrading its manufacturing line.

Jadhav said the manufacturing line in Silvasa was expanded last year.

Currently, the plant is operating at 60-70 per cent capacity which would mean the unused capacity will be enough to take care of exports.

The company manufactures all components of the generators, apart from the diesel engines, which it procures from companies like Perkins in the UK and Volvo.

Sales growth flat Asked about the growth in sales in India, Jadhav said “there has been hardly any growth in the last two years. But this year, we are seeing an increase in offtake.”

He explained that the market condition was primarily because of the economic situation and the push to renewable energy.

“Commercial enterprises, industries, hospitals will always need diesel generators as a back up. There is a base load that needs to be maintained which solar won’t be able to provide till battery technology and storage solutions become economical.

“Therefore, while diesel generators will never be clean energy, it will always remain,” said Jadhav.
